NDP Renewal Launches to Rebuild Canada’s Progressive Future
New Movement Calls on Canadians to Help Rebuild the Federal NDP from the Ground Up

September 25th, 2025 Ottawa

In the wake of the most devastating electoral defeats in federal NDP history, a new grassroots initiative, NDP Renewal, which has officially been launched with a bold call to action: Together, we can Renew and Rebuild Canada’s NDP.

With a new website now live at www.ndprenewal.ca, the movement is inviting current and former party members, labour activists, progressive allies, and concerned Canadians to take part in shaping the future of Canada’s only social democratic party. At the heart of the initiative is a nationwide survey Renew Canada’s NDP: A Call to Action which aimed at gathering honest feedback to shape a grassroots-led future. It asks Canadians what drew them to the NDP, what pushed them away, what kind of leadership they want, and how to build a more inclusive, responsive party.

“We’re not just here to fix what’s broken. We’re here to reignite the spirit of progressive change in Canada,” said Peter Julian, former MP in New Westminster-Burnaby, and a founding organizer of NDP Renewal. “This movement is about restoring the NDP as a political home for people who believe in justice, equity, sustainability, and real democratic engagement. The NDP must return to its grassroots and it should be led by the people”.

“We don’t just need a reset. We need renewal from the ground up,” said former MP Matthew Green (Hamilton Centre) and  a NDP Renewal co-founder. “People are hungry for a party that truly reflects their values and lived experiences. Through this initiative, we aim to show Canadians that the NDP is not only relevant to their everyday struggles. We are the conscience of Parliament, committed to fighting for them. NDP Renewal is about building that kind of party: rooted in community, courage, and collective action.”

A Moment of Reflection and Opportunity

“We’ve faced setbacks before,” added Julian. “After the devastating 1993 election, when the NDP dropped from 43 to 9 seats, the party undertook a thorough and deliberate renewal process. By 1997, we regained official party status and increased our seat count to 21. That recovery was only possible because the party took the time to listen and rebuild.”

“At this moment, we have the same opportunity to rebuild,” said Green. ““This is our moment to listen, reconnect, and chart the next steps together. The NDP is built by its members, it belongs to all of us. Together, we can Renew and Rebuild”

The NDP Renewal initiative is built on the five core principles of the last renewal process:

  • Equality, equity and Justice: Building a society where everyone can thrive.

  • Democracy and Transparency: Returning power to the grassroots.

  • Sustainability and Climate Leadership: Putting people and the planet before profit.

  • Community and Solidarity: Investing in care, not cuts.

  • Cooperation Over Division: Uniting progressives across generations and movements.

The NDP Renewal website includes the survey, resources for organizing, and ways for individuals to get involved in shaping the next chapter of the party and the future of Canada’s progressive movement.

About NDP Renewal:

The NDP Renewal Initiative is a grassroots campaign to define the future of Canada’s NDP. After years of challenges and a historic loss in 2025, we’re asking tough questions about who we are, what we stand for, and how we can once again be a relevant political force for everyday Canadians. By engaging members, unions, civil society, and riding associations, we’re building a package to be proposed for adoption at the 2026 Convention in Winnipeg that will set out clear values, policies, and priorities, and chart a bold new course for the NDP’s leadership and future.
